Ypsilanti residents have a way to safely dispose of controlled substances and old prescription medications.
A drug collection unit has been installed in the lobby of the Ypsilanti Police Department thanks to a grant awarded by CVS Pharmacy.
The new unit at 505 West Michigan Avenue is meant to decrease prescription drug abuse by reducing the amount of unneeded medicine in residents' homes. In addition, the effort hopes to prevent contamination of landfills and water supplies. Safely disposing of unused medication is critical to protecting our children and our environment.
The program is focused on, but not limited to, the disposal of unwanted, unused or expired prescription medications. Although this program is targeted towards prescription drugs, anyone may deposit other controlled substances with no questions asked. The only request is that sharp objects, especially hypodermic needles, not be deposited in the box.
The collection unit will be available 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.
