Volunteer Service Corp
The mission of the Volunteer Service Corp is to support the efforts of the Police Department. The VSC was created to help coordinate volunteer activities to make the community safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to any emergency situation. It provides opportunities for people to participate in a range of measures to make their families, their homes, and their communities safer from threats of crime, terrorism, and disasters of all kinds.
While law enforcement agencies are designed and staffed to maximize services to the community, there is always more work to be done. As a result of recent economic strife, agencies are experiencing an increased workload in a resource-constrained environment. More than ever, volunteerism in the law enforcement arena has become a need and not a luxury. This is a great opportunity to give back to the community.
VSC personnel provide extra “eyes and ears” during special events such as parades and the Heritage Festival. They also are engaged in outreach programs and events like Rock the Block and the annual Police Open House as well as others. VSC also provide walking patrols in the business districts. While performing these duties VSC wear a special uniform and carry police radios. Volunteers are only required to observe and report. They do not intervene or make contact with anyone engaged in questionable behavior. They are only expected to report details to the responding police officers and to be an excellent witness when the case goes to trial.
The VSC Personnel are usually recruited from those individuals that attend the Citizen’s Police Academy. There is an additional series of training classes for those interested in the program that range from crowd control, traffic direction, emergency preparedness and others. Anyone that is interested in this program is encouraged to contact the Police Department.
