Statement from the Chief of Police

“It has come to my attention that recent comments made by President Trump about police conduct have caused concerns from some residents. I realize that events that gain national attention are widely seen and impact those exposed to them. However, I believe that the true concerns about government are local and that the decisions made at that level are what directly affect people in their daily lives. It is in that light that I want to reassure our citizens that the Ypsilanti Police Department is not influenced by these comments or others made on the national stage. We have a culture within the department that promotes service to the community and a mantra that we will treat everyone with dignity and respect. That is who we are and how we conduct ourselves. The expectation for appropriate and professional conduct is clearly understood by all members of the department as is the understanding that we are all held accountable for our actions. We hold the guiding principle that we are a welcoming and inclusive community and in that vein we are dedicated to protecting all that live, work, play and go to school here. We cannot control the speech or actions of others, but we can concentrate on providing the best possible police services to those in need. That is what we have done in the past and we are committed to doing so going forward.”
