City of Ypsilanti Fire Department Receives FEMA 2017 SAFER Grant
The City of Ypsilanti Fire Department (YFD) is a recipient of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 2017 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant.
This award carries substantial benefits. Some of these benefits include: increasing firefighter safety and aid in reestablishing compliance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1710 staffing standards.
Last year, the fire department responded to 2,498 emergencies including 100 structure fires, 575 other emergency calls such as hazardous conditions or rescues and 1,823 medical emergencies with very limited fire suppression staffing. This grant will aid in hiring four additional firefighters to better serve the residents of the city.
The total amount for four firefighters over a three year period is $1,082,316. The federal share is $667,429 and the City of Ypsilanti’s participation $414,887.
We are grateful to FEMA, United States Senator Debbie Stabenow, United States Senator Gary Peters, United States Representative Debbie Dingell and the Ypsilanti and Superior Townships Fire Departments for their support.
