Hello! Welcome to my weekly newsletter about Ypsilanti City news. Our community is full of highly aware and active people. We pay attention and we get involved. To do that, we need news.
I have been aware of the lack of news coverage and the harm that it causes our community for some time now. Lack of news is harmful to democracy as well; our system of government is dependent on an educated and informed public.
My hope is that this newsletter will help alleviate the problem in a small way.
Every week on Friday, I will issue This Week with the Mayor. It will be put on our City website, our City Facebook page, and will be sent out by email and links by text through our City alert system. This will be a factual newsletter with announcements, updates on City Council and staff activities, news from the wards and wider Ypsilanti news, notices about how to get involved, and why it all matters to you.
I am inventing this as I go and I expect it may change over time. I am happy to hear ideas, suggestions, corrections and just plain comments. I want to thank my editor, Lisa Bashert, and my graphic designer, Cami Fussey, for their help. I also want to thank City Clerk Frances McMullan for the help she and her staff have provided in issuing This Week with the Mayor to you through the City systems.
Farewell to City Council Members and Mayor: On Monday, three City Council members stepped down after many years of service:
• Brian Robb served Ward 3 for 12 years.
• Dan Vogt served Ward 2 for 8 years.
• Amanda Edmonds was Mayor of our City for 4 years.
It is a challenge to serve our community as an elected official. Anyone who serves, from my viewpoint, should be respected and valued. Each of these public servants stepped up because they cared; they worked hard for our community, and performed their role to the best of their ability. My hat’s off to them, and I wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors!
