Records Bureau

The Records Bureau is responsible for processing all police incidents/reports and paperwork. In order to determine the status of a report, citizens should contact the Records Bureau.

Records Bureau Hours

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 9:00 am- 5:00 pm
Closed Wednesdays and Holidays
Phone: 734-483-8777    Fax 734-483-7060

Common reasons to contact the Records Bureau include:

    • Obtaining a copy of a police report
    • Obtaining a traffic or crash report
    • Obtaining a Gun Purchase Permit
    • Obtaining a local police clearance (Ypsilanti City residences ONLY)
    • Michigan State Police criminal history check

Fingerprinting is no longer offered by the City of Ypsilanti.  If you are interested in obtaining fingerprints, please call L1 Identity Solutions at 866-226-2952.

The Ypsilanti Police Department does not conduct court ordered Preliminary Breath Tests (PBT).
Contact the Washtenaw County Sheriff Department for information on how to obtain a concealed pistol license.

Obtaining a copy of a police report

  • Crash, private property, theft, and damaged property reports are generally available five to seven business days after the incident is filed. Make sure to call the Records Bureau at (734) 483-8777 to see if your report is ready before coming to pick it up.
  • Some reports may be exempt from disclosure under the State of Michigan FOIA regulations.

Traffic and Crash Reports

To obtain your traffic and/or crash report:

  • Visit the Ypsilanti Police Department and present your accident report number, driver's license or state identification, and $10.00 fee.
  • Your crash report may be purchased online at either CLEMIS OR  Docview.us.com (officers use two crash reporting systems depending on the type of crash, which is why it could be in either CLEMIS or Docview, but not both.)  Both companies accept credit card payments.

Gun Purchase Permit

Gun Purchase Permits can be obtained on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.

The Ypsilanti Police Department can provide a gun purchase permit for Ypsilanti city residents only. There is no fee for a gun purchase permit.

  • Residents must bring either a Michigan Driver's License or State ID to the Records Bureau.
  • You must pass a Basic Pistol Safety Questionnaire with a minimum score of 70%.
  • After we issue the permit, you have 10 days to purchase the gun.

The purchase permit will need to be notarized. The Records Bureau can notarize your permit for a fee of $10.00, or you may have it notarized by any notary.

Once you have made your gun purchase, you must provide the Ypsilanti Police Department Records Bureau with the Michigan State Police copy and Agency copy within 10 days.

Obtaining a Local Police Clearance:

  • A local police clearance indicating your conduct in the City of Ypsilanti may be requested for local or international purposes.  If you have relocated to a different State, you may request a certificate through the mail; otherwise, you may visit the Records Bureau to request a clearance.

  • If you're obtaining local police clearance for an adoption, it could take up to five business days. The criminal history checks are prepared in "certificate" form, and the fee is $10.00.

Michigan State Police Criminal History Check:

Effective February 1, 2006, Michigan law regarding criminal records has changed. Now the general public may receive information on arrest records that do not have a conviction attached. You still will NOT receive information about warrants, suppressed records, federal records, or criminal records from other states.

Anyone can search the official MSP Criminal History record database for $10.00 per search, using MasterCard or Visa.

The Michigan Criminal History Record Database is updated daily with Felony Arrest, Misdemeanor Arrest, Charge, and Conviction information provided by law enforcement, prosecuting attorneys, and courts throughout the State of Michigan.

This search includes all Public Michigan Criminal History Information as allowed by Public Act 310 of 2005. It does not include federal arrests or criminal records from other states.

A search for criminal record information that might be in another state requires you to correspond directly with the criminal record repository of that state.
