Recycling Guidelines

The City of Ypsilanti is now providing single stream recycling which means containers and paper products may now be mixed in the bin.  Please do not put bottles of oil or bags of rechargeable batteries in the red bin.

Containers:

Plastic Bottles  or tubs with numbers  1(PET), 2 (HDPE), 4(LDPE), 5(PP), #6(PS) or #7  on the Bottom

  • No plastic lids or plastic bags
  • No motor oil bottles even with a 1 or 2 
  • No styrofoam curbside
  • Clean plastic and discard caps

Clear, Green, & Brown Glass Food & Beverage Containers

  • Bottles and jars, NO window glass
  • NO ceramics or Pyrex type glass
  • NO lightbulbs
  • Clean glass & remove metal caps to recycle, plastic caps are trash.

Tin & Aluminum

  • Rinse cans
  • Includes cans, foil & trays
  • Scrap metal up to 1 cubic foot

Milk Cartons & Juice Boxes

  • Clean & flatten
  • NO plastic caps
  • NO frozen juice concentrate tubes

Paper:

Corrugated Cardboard & Boxboard

  • Bundle in 3 foot by 4 foot bundles or in box or paper bag
  • If too large to bundle, take to any drop-off center
  • Place next to or on top of bin
  • Cereal boxes, cardboard egg cartons and similar type material
  • Flatten and remove inner bags or packaging
  • No boxboard with food particles or grease on box

 Newspaper, Magazines & Junk Mail

  • Newspapers include glossy inserts
  • Magazines and paperback books including phone books
  • Mixed paper, glossy coated OK
  • NO plastic or metal tabs, binders, transparencies, carbon paper, or tissue paper

Other Recyclables

Rechargeable Batteries

  • Place in sealed clear baggie next to the bin
  • Place car batteries in separate clear plastic bag, tightly tied

Styrofoam (only accepted at drop-off center)

  • Remove food particles
  • Styrofoam is NOT accepted curbside

Motor Oil/Transmission Fluid

  • Place at the curb in sturdy containers such as clean empty plastic detergent or milk jugs, clearly marked OIL
  • NO glass containers, No antifreeze
  • NO containers over 1 gallon for curbside pick-up, up to 5 gallon accepted at drop-off site

 

NOTE OF IMPORTANCE:
Place the bin at the curb 6 feet from your rubbish by 6:00 a.m. on your regular collection day.  Recycle bins have a 50 pound weight limit.
