The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for planning and development of 7 neighborhood parks and year-round recreational programs in athletics, dance, crafts, music, and special holiday activities and events.
The Department manages and operates facilities such as the Recreation Park Community / Senior Center offering services such as daily meals, activities, transportation to the Center, travel, and tours. Other facilities include Parkridge Community Center, which is open six days per week, the Farmer's Market and Historic Freighthouse.
During the summer months, the department manages Rutherford Municipal Pool offering individual and family season passes, swim lessons, team swim events, lifeguard training, and special family events.

The Department also coordinates requests for:
- Park / shelter reservations
- Neighborhood street closings
- Noise Permits
- Special Event permits
