Ypsilanti: Greetings on this quiet Memorial Day. This year there is no Memorial Day Procession, due to the pandemic.
In past years, the annual procession included two elements to thank our fallen soldiers and their families. We stop every year on the Cross Street Bridge. Taps is played, there is a gun salute, and we throw flowers and rose petals in the river in remembrance of sailors who died at sea. The procession then proceeds to Highland Cemetery at the Civil War monument. In addition to Taps and the gun salute, there are speeches of remembrance and we place wreaths around the monument.
During our Stay Home Stay Safe quarantine, many of our customary events are canceled or altered, including this one. It is a holiday of commemoration and without the procession, I ask us all to take a moment to remember the men and women who paid the ultimate price for our country.
Whether or not you are comfortable with various wars, or the decisions that lead to them, the people we remember today cared enough about our country and our safety to offer their lives for our protection. They and their families have earned our respect and should be remembered with honor.
So please. Take a moment today to thank them. With or without a procession,we can all give them the respect they and their families deserve.
