WHEREAS, Diversity and Inclusivity are the pillars in which ideas, experience, art, and expression lay; and
WHEREAS, as a people we are able to achieve more together, and must oppose all that wish to cause division among us; and
WHEREAS, Ypsilanti passed a Non-Discrimination Ordinance, first in December of 1997 and amended in January of 2017, with the intent that no person be denied equal protection of the laws nor be denied the enjoyment of their civil or political rights, or be discriminated against because of actual perceived race, color, religion, national origin, immigration status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, marital status, disability status, familial status, educational association, source of income, height or weight; and
WHEREAS, the values of Ypsilanti run contradictory to the statements and actions of this President and his administration, and we denounce all those that share in its abhorrent rhetoric; and
WHEREAS, Ypsilanti will continue to vehemently stand against those that wish to oppress and devalue minority groups; and
WHEREAS, Ypsilanti will continue to foster inclusive ideals, oppose intolerance, and continue to fight against policies that intend to reduce the humanity of any person.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Beth Bashert, Mayor of Ypsilanti, condemn the racist statements of President Trump toward the four Congresswomen, celebrate the inclusivity and cherish the diversity of this country. Together, we will continue to fight those who wish to quell the values that we in Ypsilanti hold so dear.
