Statement from the Chief of Police Regarding Potential Scams Related to COVID-19
I hope this message finds you safe and healthy. Unfortunately in these uncertain times there are some who would use the current COVID-19 pandemic to their advantage. Although thankfully there have not been any reported incidents in the City of Ypsilanti there have been scams reported in other areas. As a reminder please do not share your personal information with anyone on the telephone or on the internet. Do not accept items from door to door solicitors. If someone wants to give you something for free you should be suspicious. It is also unlawful to solicit door to door in the city without a permit issued through the City Clerk’s Office. Utility workers should have some form of identification with them that shows who they are and for whom they work. Do not let just anyone into your home without verifying their identity and reason for being there. If you face any of these issues and you are not sure what to do please call the Police Department immediately. Even though this pandemic has caused major changes in our community please know that we are here for you and ready to provide with the best possible police service.
We will defeat this virus and hopefully get back to the normally vibrant community that is Ypsilanti.
In the meantime stay home unless you are going out for essential items like medicine or food. Even though the weather is getting better and there is the itch to gather for picnics, BBQ’s, basketball games and disc golf please refrain from those activities. Isolation and social distancing are the best ways to flatten the curve of the rate of infection. The sooner that happens the sooner we can return to normalcy. Wash your hands well and frequently. Don’t touch your face with unwashed hands. Cover your cough and sneeze and if you are sick please stay at home and call your healthcare provider for treatment advice.
We are all in this together and it will take all of us doing our part. If we can be of service to you please don’t hesitate to call.
