Statement from the Chief of Police regarding tent evictions
In these trying times we want to be supportive of all of our community members especially those that are most vulnerable. It is important to do all we can to protect people from the potentially devastating health effects of COVID-19 and suppress the community spread as much as possible. In that light the Ypsilanti Police Department will not be engaged in any activities that disturb the living situations of our homeless population.
There will be no tent evictions or displacement of encampments of any kind. In this way we can insure that our homeless citizens can stay safe and secure and not have to find alternate arrangements for their survival supplies which would force them to have extra interaction with other people and possible exposure. As an added measure of support the City of Ypsilanti has strategically placed Potra-Johns around the city that are equipped with hand washing/sanitizing equipment for the us of our homeless.
This action in no way is meant to interfere with any other efforts to assist the homeless. The Ypsilanti Police Department will continue to assist our homeless in finding shelter if that is their desire.
