NEW BUSINESS: Beara Bakes Meet Cat, the creative mind and heart behind Beara Bakes, Ypsi’s newest bakery that’s bringing a fresh, local comfort to our downtown. Cat’s journey into food started early—their first job at 18 was baking for Espresso Royale in East Lansing—but it wasn’t until their late 20s that they found their true passion for the culinary world while working at Spencer’s. “That’s when I knew I wanted to do food as a career,” they shared. Beara Bakes started small, with monthly bake sales that featured 4-5 item menus curated in boxes for subscribers. “It grew to about 50 boxes a month,” Cat says. From there, Beara Bakes grew through word of mouth, with wholesale and custom orders becoming the next step. One of their first wholesale accounts was RoosRoast, where the local connection was key.Cat says Beara Bakes is best known for their biscuits, a fan favorite. But they are always trying new things in the kitchen or making small adjustments to perfect a recipe. Since moving to Ypsi in 2018, Cat has felt a strong sense of community. “Ypsilanti is so welcoming. You can feel that people want the city to thrive and that local businesses have each other’s backs.” They’re excited to see Ypsi grow and hopes to contribute to that energy by supporting the local economy and creating a space where people can enjoy quality baked goods. Outside of baking, Cat enjoys spending time with their cat, being outside, relaxing on their porch with a book, and learning how to crochet. When asked about their vision for Ypsilanti, they shared that they would love to see a more pedestrian-friendly downtown, with more spaces for the community to gather and enjoy the local flavor. Stop by Beara Bakes to try some of Cat’s signature treats and experience the love and care they put into every item. This isn’t just about baking—it’s about building community and contributing to the city we all love.

Michigan Avenue is…not open yet! The Michigan Avenue library’s reconstruction is nearing completion, but the welcome-back celebration has been postponed! Construction work continues on the downtown library branch. Visit their website here for more details about reopening plans. The on-going event at Ypsilanti District Library: Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along the Underground Railroad Check out the new exhibit at YDL-Whittaker from Sept. 1 - Oct. 20. Many books have been written on the subject, but there is very little visual documentation of the Underground Railroad because of its secretive nature. Photographer Jeanine Michna-Bales, using a decade of research into the way “fugitive” slaves escaped to freedom, took photographs that encompass roughly 2,000 miles based on actual sites, cities, and places along the Underground railroad. The stunning photographs help visitors imagine what the long road to freedom may have looked like as seen through the eyes of the ones who made this epic journey.
