The City’s snow ordinance and abatement procedures go into effect on October 16th, 2023. Please be advised of the following:

  1. Snow must be removed from sidewalks and parking lots within 24 hours of first accumulation of one inch (1”) or more.
  2. Ice must, if practicable, immediately be removed from sidewalks and parking lots. When immediate removal is impracticable, sand, salt or other chemical or materials must immediately be used and then ice must be removed as soon as practicable.
  3. Only one (1) warning for abatement will be left at any parcel per snow season. Further violations will result in abatement without additional notices left at the property. The property owner/agent is responsible for abatement costs.
  4. A citation will be issued for every violation, even the first. Fines increase each offense.
  5. A five-foot (5’) path must be maintained on sidewalks at all times to be in compliance. (Properties with public sidewalks less than 5’ in width must be cleared to the edges of the paved areas).

Ypsilanti City Code Chapter 94, Section 94-135(a) defines the “snow season” as October 1st through May 31st. Failure to comply with abatement notice will result in the City’s contractor being hired to correct the violation, with all costs for services invoiced to the property owner/agent. Further information may be obtained through the Code Enforcement Division at (734) 482-9626, or at www.cityofypsilanti.com/codeenforcement.

Early Voting is in effect starting with the February 27, 2024 Presidential Primary!

In 2024, Michigan voters will be asked to cast their ballots during 3 major elections. For the first time ever this February, all voters will be given the opportunity to cast their ballot early in-person for 9 full days prior to each major election.

Early Voting sites will be operating across the county to accommodate those voters who wish to cast and have their ballot counted in-person before Election Day. The City of Ypsilanti is partnering with the Washtenaw County Clerk’s office to provide early voting services.

City of Ypsilanti voters may visit either of the two Early Voting sites below from February 17-February 25 between 9:00 am-5:00 pm to cast their vote prior to the February 27, 2024, Presidential Primary:

  •  Ypsilanti Freighthouse, 100 Market Place, Ypsilanti, MI, 48198
  • Washtenaw County Learning Resource Center, 4135 Washtenaw Ave, Ann Arbor, MI, 48108

Please note that more traditional methods of casting a ballot, such as voting absentee or voting in-person on Election Day, are still available. For more information on Election Day or Absentee Voting, please visit Michigan.gov/Vote or contact the City of Ypsilanti Clerk's Office at

Historic Preservation

Looking back:

In 2023, the City held two preservation-related events: a state tax credit webinar and Old House Ypsi.

  • About 25 people logged in to the webinar live online and 87 people have viewed the recording, available at https://cityofypsilanti.com/263/Historic-District .
  • Old House Ypsi hosted about 50 people at the event and handouts are available at https://cityofypsilanti.com/263/Historic-District .

If there are topics you’d like to learn about related to your old house or building, share your ideas with preservation planner Ellen Thackery at ethackery@cityofypsilanti.com .

In 2023, the Historic District Commission received 106 applications for work in the Historic District. The preservation planner approved 48 of those (45%) administratively, the commission approved  57 of the remaining applications, and issued only one denial for the year.

Looking ahead:

The City was awarded a $50,000 grant from the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, through the Michigan Strategic Fund, State Historic Preservation Office, for a resurvey of our local historic district.  The resulting report and data will document the district for the first time since the early 1980s, help us tell the story of our district better, and help us make the best decisions about our important historic resources. An architectural historian will be hired for the project, and the request for proposals will be issued in early 2024. Work will be completed by September 2025.

With the City Council’s approval, the Historic District Commission changed the frequency of its meetings.  In 2024, the Historic District Commission will meet once a month, on the second Tuesday of every month. Applications and supporting materials are due to the preservation planner at 4 pm, 11 days before the meeting. The City’s 2024 web calendar has been updated, and the new calendar with application due dates has been posted in the lobby at city hall and at https://cityofypsilanti.com/254/Historic-District-Commission .

Peninsular Dam Update

Over $4.7 million has been raised by the project team (City of Ypsilanti & Huron River Watershed Council) to remove the dam.

In May, the City of Ypsilanti received $3.78 million from Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) from the State of Michigan to remove the Peninsular Paper Dam—an additional $650,000 has been previously awarded from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources MDNR and $300,000 from USFWS National Fish Passage program. The city's commitment of $500,000 since the project proposal launch hasn't changed.

If the dam fails, this high-hazard structure could cause severe damage or loss of life. Removing the dam will help aquatic ecosystems recover after extreme weather and reduce the risk of flooding in nearby communities.

The city is on the path to restoring the original waterway in this area of the Huron River, thanks to the Huron River Watershed Council, which has helped tremendously to secure all the funding thus far. The Peninsular Dam was originally constructed 110 years ago. With much research, hopes are to remove the entire impoundment, restore the historic powerhouse building, and create a new future for Peninsular Park. The only current obstacle is securing the funding to complete the process.

CONSTRUCTION NOTICE: FOREST ST BRIDGE

The Forest Street Bridge is open to traffic for the winter! A protected pathway has been provided on the south side of the bridge for pedestrians, as sidewalks will be completed in Spring 2024.  The intersection of Rice and Forest is also open to traffic.   Work is planned to resume in early spring.

This work included deck patching, shallow concrete deck overlay, pier cap replacement, bearing replacement at pier, approach reconstruction, guardrail replacement, and slope paving repairs.  During pier cap replacement and deck patching, additional damage was discovered and repaired, which led to the delay in re-opening. Sidewalk (including sidewalk widening on the south side to accommodate the Border to Border Trail), as well as other final and necessary items, will be completed in spring 2024. This project is largely funded by a competitive grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Local Bridge Fund.

Washtenaw Community College (WCC) has been awarded a $2.09 million grant to launch a jobs and education initiative to boost the quality of life and outcomes for underrepresented populations in Ypsilanti.

The Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation grant funds WCC’s new Advance Ypsi initiative to strengthen pathways to prosperity through education and career development.

Advance Ypsi is part of the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Detroit Drives Degrees Community College Collaborative (D3C3), which today announced over $30 million in support from Ballmer Group and the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation. The D3C3 initiative is a partnership with seven Southeast Michigan community colleges, including Washtenaw, to ensure students have equitable educational opportunities and graduate with high-value credentials or degrees that lead to good-paying, in-demand jobs with local employers, boosting the Region’s overall prosperity.

Our initiative will serve 300  high school students and adults from Ypsilanti over three years, training and preparing them for careers with an earning potential of at least $40,000. When fully realized, more than $12 million annually could be earned by residents in a community where 50% of households live below the poverty level and the post-secondary educational rate is 20%, according to the most recent US Census.

“We are working hand in hand with YCS, employers and WCC faculty to develop curriculum that pairs classroom instruction with real-world experience to equip students for jobs in high-demand sectors, many of which are going unfilled in today’s economy due to a lack of skilled workers,” said Brandon Tucker, WCC Vice President & Chief Workforce and Community Development Officer.

We are excited to aid students with enrolling in one of the following IT, Manufacturing, or Mobility Programs:

Accelerated Certificate programs in Manufacturing and Transportation/Automotive Occupations:

  • Welding and Fabrication Principles Certificate (CTWLDS)
  • Automotive Services Technician Certificate (CTASVT)
  • Robotics Technician (CTROBT)
  • Automation Specialist – Advance Certificate
  • Auto Body Repair Certification (CTAUBR)

Accelerated Certificate programs in mobility-focused IT Occupations:

  • Computer Systems Technology (CTCSTC)
  • Computer Networking Academy Certificate (CVCNAC) – Advance Certificate
  • Automotive Cybersecurity Certificate (CTACYB)

Students who participate in Advance Ypsi will receive benefits to include, but not limited to:

  • Support to determine career interests and goals as well as well exploration.
  • Dedicated advisor and success coach to support life issues that might arise and eliminate barriers to success.
  • Advance Ypsi also has a Career and Life Success Coordinator (Nannette Knox) who will also be there to support you along the way and eradicate barriers that might show up.
  • Expanded career opportunities through shadowing and engagement with local employers.
  • Assistance with job applications, resumes and interviews.
  • Potential paid internships, apprenticeships and job shadowing.
  • Financial support for tuition, fees and equipment needed to be successful in the classroom and on the job.

“We see Advance Ypsi as an opportunity to not only offer educational pathways for Ypsilanti residents, but we see it as an opportunity to transform generational trajectory for families,” stated Dr. Stephanie L. Krah,  Acting Chief Community Development Officer/Executive Director of College Access and Success.

We look forward to the opportunity assist residents of Ypsilanti in enrolling in one of our programs. If you have additional questions, please feel free to visit our website Website: www.wccnet.edu/advanceypsi OR  us email us at  advanceypsi@wccnet.edu.

Attention Adult Education Advocates and Partners,

Winter’s here along with the countdown to the new year. WCC Adult Transitions Pathway program wants to share all the amazing opportunities we have for learners in the coming year. We’re super excited to grow our program with the help of our valued community partners including Ypsilanti Township, WISD, and Washtenaw Literacy. We recently added an ESL Conversational group, Digital Skills lab, GED class for ESL learners, and a new fast-track model in our GED classes. These classes are offered at WCC’s Main Campus and the Ypsilanti Township Community Center in virtual, in-person, and hybrid models.

We are currently registering students in our GED and English as a Second Language Pathway classes that will be starting in January.

Enclosed are flyers with more details about how to register for the winter semester. For additional information call (734) 677-5006 or visit our website.

As we near the end of the semester, and many of our students celebrate significant academic milestones, here’s what a few had to say about their experience with the program.

“I like that it focused on the math. I really liked the teachers- I’ve never had teachers that genuinely cared so much! Everything we studied was on the test, so relevant. I appreciated that my teacher checked in on me and helped me move along the process and a general concern for my personal well-being when I was sick.” (Larkin, GED Grad)

"I can communicate in English at work and at the doctor or pharmacy, or for car repairs." (Emerson, ESL Student)

Thank you for continued support of the students and the program.
Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season.
