The Building Department issues all sign permits within the limits of the City of Ypsilanti. Both permanent and temporary signs require a permit. A site plan is required if the sign will be free-standing.
All sign permit applications for non-residential buildings require a Master Sign Plan. This plan identifies the size, location, and lighting of all existing and proposed signs on the property. It does not have to be to scale.
General Requirements
- All sign structures must relate to the primary use of the lot on which they are located.
- Permits from applicable reviewing bodies are required prior to construction.
- Signs proposed in the Historic District, except temporary signs, require approval by the Historic District Commission.
The Building Department has 10 working days to review permit applications. Please allow the necessary time when scheduling your project. Inspection requests should be made at least 24 hours in advance.
