Freedom of Information Act Requests

City Policy

It is the policy of the City of Ypsilanti that all persons, except those incarcerated, consistent with the Michigan Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), are entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government and the official acts of those who represent them as public officials and employees. The people shall be informed so that they fully participate in the democratic process.

The City’s policy with respect to FOIA requests is to comply with State law in all respects and to respond to FOIA requests in a consistent, fair, and even-handed manner regardless of who makes such a request.

Pursuant to this policy, the Ypsilanti City Council has adopted Procedures and Guidelines and a Public Summary regarding FOIA. You may review these by clicking on a link below. You may also obtain a printed copy of the Public Summary at the City Clerk’s Office.

Making a FOIA Request

FOIA Requests must be submitted in writing. The request must describe the public record sufficiently to enable the City to locate it. Requests must also include the name and the mailing address of the individual making the request or other information sufficient to contact the individual and respond to the request.

For your convenience, the City provides a FOIA Request Form, which is located at the link below. Use of this form is not required, and requests may be in any form of writing (letter, fax, email, etc.). However, please include the words “FOIA” or “FOIA Request” in the request to assist the City in providing a prompt response.
