Ypsilanti, MI, February 28, 2017: The City of Ypsilanti is proud to announce the arrival of our new City Manager, Darwin D.P. McClary.  Darwin comes to Ypsilanti with 27 years of combined experience in Michigan municipal management, most recently the Village Manager of the Village of Lake Orion. 


Darwin was born in Rochester Hills, Michigan and grew up in the Rochester and Oxford area, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Human Services with a concentration in Public Administration from Siena Heights College and a Master of Public Administration Degree from Golden Gate University.  Darwin has a passion for social, environmental, and economic justice.  He believes in collaborative leadership and shares and the vision and values of the City of Ypsilanti.


Darwin and his husband Steven, have four sons, Aleksandr, Shane, Aran, and Maksim.  Steven has an accomplished career as an educator and published novelist.  Darwin and his family are excited to be welcomed to the City of Ypsilanti as they have a strong connection with the City and Eastern Michigan University. 


Mayor Amanda Edmonds stated, “We, as a community, are so excited to welcome Darwin McClary. We feel he is the right fit for the community with his passion for social, environmental, and economic justice and his strong background in municipal finance and working in communities with similar challenges and opportunities.  Darwin will be a great addition to our City Team”.  


Darwin started his role as City Manager on February 27, 2017. Darwin McClary said of his first day, “I am excited to work in a progressive City in which my family has roots, and I look forward to working with the community, community leaders, and local businesses to keep Ypsilanti moving forward in a positive direction.”


The City of Ypsilanti will be hosting a “Meet and Greet” on Friday, March 10, 2017, from 3 – 5 p.m. in the City Council Chamber to give everyone an opportunity to meet the new City Manager.
