Safety Tips

Keeping You & Your Family Safe
  • Never open the door to someone you don’t know.
  • Be aware and observant of your surroundings.
  • Don’t let a cell phone conversation distract you from your environment.
  • Stay in well-lit areas and never take shortcuts or go into an isolated area.
  • If you see a suspicious person in your neighborhood who does not belong, get a physical description and call the police.
  • In case of an emergency, always call 911.
Keeping Your Children Safe
  • Make sure your children know their full name, address, and phone number.
  • Explain to children why they should never give out their personal information.
  • Teach your children not to talk to strangers or people they do not know very well.
  • Make sure your children are familiar with their surroundings, such as main streets and landmarks.
  • Make sure your children understand expected routes to and from school, parks, and friends' homes.
  • Keep a list of emergency contact numbers and who to contact when help is needed.
  • Teach your children to trust their feelings and tell if anyone makes them feel sad, scared, or confused in any way.
Keeping Your Property Safe
  • Keep doors and windows locked at all times.
  • Keep blinds closed in the evening so passers-by can't look into your home.
  • Use an automatic timer for lights so it's not obvious when you and your family aren’t home.
  • Keep the exterior of your home well lit by using a porch light or landscaping lights.
  • Install motion detector lights near the doors of your home.
  • Keep property such as bicycles, tools, and sports equipment inside the house or in a secure garage.
  • Don’t leave a spare key under a door mat or mailbox.
  • Get to know your neighbors. Tell trusted neighbors if or when you will be out of town. When going out of town, have your mail held at the post office so it doesn’t pile up in your mailbox.
  • Keep bushes and trees trimmed around your home.
  • Keep vehicle doors locked.
  • Do not leave valuable items inside your vehicle or in plain view.
